At Katharine’s Academy of Dance our Competition Team is a group of dancers
committed to dance excellence
.  Through hard work and dedication these dancers learn
teamwork, camaraderie, and the ability to take criticism and use it to improve as performers.  They
have the experience of being adjudicated by top professionals in the dance industry,  receiving
feedback on their performances, and they have opportunities to perform within the community as
well as at Regional Competition Events.
Our Competition Team is about growing and improving as
dancers and gaining respect for others in our art form
.  Competitions are not about winning a
trophy, or being the best, but about doing your own personal best and using the feedback
received to build and improve your skills
.

2010-2011 Team Placement:
S
elected Recital Pieces will be announced following our
evening show on Saturday, July 3rd 2010

*Students participating in selected pieces will receive team packets following their
placement onto the team.

All students must audition before being placed onto the team.  Our 2010-2011 team auditions will
be based upon rehearsal and performance for our 2010 annual recital.
 Auditioning students will
be judged based on a variety of factors; ability to handle criticism and receive feedback from their
performance,  performance quality, personality, potential, teamwork, attitude, how well they dance
in a group and individually, commitment to classes currently, commitment to improving and
practicing, strength, balance, coordination, musicality, technique, flexibility, and charisma.  The
dancer should have an overall package that includes all of the factors listed above.  Its not just
about one or two things, but about the complete dancer as a person and performer.  Additionally,
please know that when judging you/your child we will be looking for the execution of the
movement, it is not about whether or not you can do a certain step/technique, its about doing it
correctly and with strength, balance, coordination, all while performing to the best of your ability.
Placement onto the team is entirely up to the studio director and other i
nstructors.  Up to 10
dances will be selected from our 2010 recital
; parents and dancers should respect and trust that
all decisions made are in the best interest of the dancers and team.
*A list of abilities we look for in our competition team students is available.  Please contact the studio to request.

When competing, just as in a sports competition, the dancers will be referred to as the competition
team.  They will work together, and support each other, and will be adjudicated together during
competition.  Scoring high or low, they will find accomplishment from their teamwork and the final
product of their hard work.  Being part of the team requires a year-long commitment from the
dancers (Sept. – June).  Team members need to be fully committed to making dance a priority
above other sports and activities.  This does not mean that you cannot participate in other things,
but team rehearsals, events, classes, and competitions should take precedence over the dancer’s
other commitments.  Team members will be required to take a certain number of regular technique
classes (as listed below), as well as attending all rehearsals (held on Friday afternoons or Early
Saturday Mornings.  Team members will also be required to attend and participate in all
Competitions scheduled and all Performances scheduled (this includes the Annual Recital).  Team
members are allowed to miss a maximum of 2 technique classes per month, and 5 rehearsals
during the entire season (Sept-June) NO EXCEPTIONS FOR REHEARSALS.  Dancers on the
team who miss more than the maximum number of classes/rehearsals will be dismissed from the
team.  Family events, such as a pre-planned vacation, that will take the dancer out of classes for
more than the allotted misses should be discussed with the studio director to plan for make-ups or
to make other arrangements for the dancer, in certain cases, if it negatively affects the rest of the
team, that member may be dismissed for the season.
Team members will be required to be examples in and out of the studio, they must have a good
attitude in class and towards others at all times, profanity, violence etc will not be tolerated and will
be cause for dismissal from the team.  Team members must keep at least a B+ grade average and
copies of report cards will be required each quarter of the school year.
